ChatGPT Ads Explained: Formats, Cost, and How to Advertise in 2026

Last updated: 8 September 2026

Four months ago, advertising inside ChatGPT required a six-figure commitment and a call with OpenAI’s sales team. Today, you can set up a campaign yourself, with no minimum spend, from a self-serve dashboard. That’s the fastest a major ad platform has gone from “enterprise-only pilot” to “open to everyone” — here’s exactly how it works right now.

This is the ChatGPT-specific deep dive. For how it compares against Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, see our AI Platform Ads overview.

Can you advertise on ChatGPT in 2026?

Yes. OpenAI launched a self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager in beta in May 2026, open to US businesses with no minimum spend requirement. You set up an account, write your ad, choose a cost-per-click or cost-per-thousand-impression bid, and your ad becomes eligible to appear in ChatGPT conversations. This is a major shift from the platform’s February 2026 pilot launch, which required a minimum spend as high as $200,000–$250,000 and direct engagement with OpenAI’s ad sales team.

How did ChatGPT ads get here? A quick timeline

  • February 9, 2026: Pilot launch, US-only, Free and Go subscription tiers only. Flat $60 CPM. Minimum spend $200,000–$250,000, sales-assisted only.
  • Spring 2026: Minimum spend cut to $50,000 as OpenAI opened the pilot to more advertisers.
  • May 5, 2026: Self-serve Ads Manager launches in beta at ads.openai.com. Minimum spend removed entirely. CPC bidding added alongside the existing CPM model. Measurement pixel and Conversions API introduced for tracking.
  • Since May 2026: Geographic rollout expanded beyond the US into several additional countries, with ad load reportedly climbing fastest in newer markets.

The direction is unmistakable: OpenAI moved from “enterprise pilot” to “open platform” faster than any previous major ad network, and pricing has fallen as access widened.

What do ChatGPT ads actually look like?

Ads do not appear inside ChatGPT’s answer text — OpenAI has held this line since day one. Instead, a clearly labeled “Sponsored” recommendation card appears alongside or after the AI’s response, visually separated from the organic answer. There’s currently no self-serve video, carousel, or interactive ad format — everything today is a text/card-based sponsored recommendation. OpenAI has signaled more formats are coming, but nothing beyond the current card format is publicly available yet.

What does ChatGPT advertising cost?

Two bidding models are available through self-serve Ads Manager:

  • CPC (cost-per-click): roughly $2–8 per click depending on category and competition — comparable to or slightly above competitive Google Ads keywords in the same industry.
  • CPM (cost-per-thousand-impressions): roughly $25–60, down sharply from the flat $60 CPM at pilot launch.

There is currently no minimum spend on the self-serve platform — a meaningful change from a platform that required six figures to enter just months ago.

How does targeting work on ChatGPT ads?

Targeting is intent-based rather than the checkbox demographics you’d set on Meta or Google. You describe your product, audience, and relevant keywords in an open text field, and OpenAI’s system matches your ad to conversations where it’s contextually relevant — closer to how the AI itself interprets intent than to traditional ad-platform targeting. Geographic targeting exists but is still limited: primarily US states and select cities at launch, expanding gradually as the platform matures. If you’re used to Google’s granular location and audience controls, expect ChatGPT’s targeting to feel earlier-stage — that’s the tradeoff of being in a new channel.

Should your business advertise on ChatGPT right now?

Worth testing now if: you already run performance campaigns and have budget you can afford to experiment with — the no-minimum self-serve entry means testing costs you only what you choose to spend, and being an early advertiser in a new channel typically means less competition and cheaper results while the auction is thin. B2B and software companies in particular may find ChatGPT’s user base (people actively asking detailed questions) a strong intent match.

Wait if: you need granular targeting, proven creative formats, or a large volume of historical data before committing budget — all still limited here compared to Google or Meta. Treat any spend here as a test budget, not a core channel, until the platform matures further.

Do this regardless: keep building your organic presence in ChatGPT’s answers through GEO work (see our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT) — that’s free, works whether or not you ever run a paid campaign, and current data shows it already influences which businesses get mentioned far more than ads do today.

How to set up your first ChatGPT ad campaign

  1. Go to ads.openai.com and create an account (US businesses, self-serve beta as of publishing)
  2. Set up billing — no minimum spend commitment required
  3. Write your sponsored recommendation card: OpenAI’s guidance favors specific, helpful copy over traditional ad language, consistent with how the platform’s own answers behave
  4. Choose CPC or CPM bidding based on whether you’re optimizing for clicks or reach
  5. Add the OpenAI measurement pixel and Conversions API to your site so you can actually attribute conversions back to ad spend
  6. Start with a small test budget — pricing and targeting are both still evolving, so measure before scaling

FAQ

Do I need a minimum budget to advertise on ChatGPT?

No. As of May 2026, OpenAI removed the minimum spend requirement entirely for self-serve advertisers. Earlier in the year it required $200,000–$250,000, then $50,000 — now there is none.

Are ChatGPT ads shown to all users?

Currently, ads appear for Free and Go-tier subscribers. Paid ChatGPT subscribers on higher tiers are not currently shown ads.

Can I run video ads on ChatGPT?

Not yet on self-serve. The current format is a labeled “Sponsored” text/card recommendation. OpenAI has indicated more formats are planned but hasn’t shipped them publicly.

How do ChatGPT ad costs compare to Google Ads?

Roughly comparable per click in many categories ($2–8 CPC), though direct comparison is difficult this early — Google’s auction has 20+ years of price discovery behind it; ChatGPT’s has months. Expect volatility as the platform matures.

Is it too early to advertise on ChatGPT?

Not necessarily — with no minimum spend, the downside of testing is capped at whatever budget you choose to risk, and early advertisers in new ad auctions often get the best relative performance before competition catches up. It’s a test-budget channel, not yet a channel to bet your whole strategy on.

How does Azizi Media approach ChatGPT ads for clients?

As a test-and-learn channel layered on top of proven performance marketing — never a replacement for Google or Meta budgets, but a reasonable line item to experiment with while access is still open and cheap. Talk to us about testing it for your business →
