How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT (GEO Explained)

Your next customer might not Google you. They’ll ask ChatGPT “best digital marketing agency in Dubai” or

ask Perplexity “who should build my clinic’s website in Hyderabad” — and act on the answer. Getting your

business into those answers is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and in 2026 it’s where early

movers win entire categories.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of making your business visible and citable to AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity,

Gemini, Copilot — so they mention or recommend you in their answers. It overlaps with SEO but isn’t

identical: search engines rank pages, while AI assistants synthesize answers from sources they trust and

cite. GEO is about becoming one of those trusted sources.

How do AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend?

Four main inputs:

1 Third-party review platforms — Clutch, Google reviews, GoodFirms, industry directories. AI models

treat verified reviews as ground truth about quality.

2 Community discussions — Reddit threads and Quora answers feed AI training and live search

heavily. If people recommend you there, AI repeats it.

3 Your own website — but only if it’s crawlable, factual, and answer-shaped. Vague marketing copy gets

skipped; specific claims with numbers get quoted.

4 Consistency across the web — same name, services, and locations everywhere. Contradictions

make AI drop you for a “safer” answer.

The 7 steps to become AI-recommendable

1. Let AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt isn’t blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. Many sites block them

accidentally via aggressive bot-protection settings.

2. Add an llms.txt file

A simple text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that tells AI systems what your business is, what you offer, and

which pages matter. Takes an hour; most of your competitors haven’t heard of it.

3. Make every important page answer-shaped

Question-style headings (“How much does X cost?”) with a direct, specific answer in the first two

sentences. AI quotes pages that answer cleanly; it skips pages that make it dig.

4. Publish the content your competitors are afraid to

Pricing guides, honest timelines, “how to choose a provider” checklists. AI engines favour these pages

because users ask these exact questions and few businesses answer them.

5. Build your review footprint

Get verified reviews on the platforms AI trusts for your industry (for agencies: Clutch; for local businesses:

Google). Ten specific reviews beat a hundred generic star ratings — reviews that name the service and

city are what get you surfaced for “best X in Y” questions.

6. Use schema markup

Structured data (Organization, Service, FAQPage) tells AI exactly what you do and where, in a format it

parses natively. If you’re on WordPress, Yoast or Rank Math covers the basics; service-level schema

usually needs adding manually.

7. Show up in communities

Genuinely helpful answers on Reddit and Quora in your niche become AI source material for years. Two or

three good answers a month compounds.

How do you measure whether GEO is working?

Three checks, monthly:

Ask the AI engines directly — the same 3–5 questions a customer would ask (“best [your service] in

[your city]”), and track whether you appear and which sources are cited

AI referral traffic in GA4 — sessions arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com

Branded search growth in Search Console — people who saw you in an AI answer often Google your

name next

Expect a realistic timeline of 2–3 months for on-site changes to show up in AI answers and 3–6 months for

“best in city” recommendation queries.

FAQ

1. Is GEO different from SEO?

They share a foundation (crawlable site, authoritative content), but GEO

adds AI-specific layers: llms.txt, answer-shaped content, citation-worthy specifics, and review-platform

presence. Good news: GEO work improves your Google rankings too.

2. Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content?

It protects it from being read — including by the AI

assistants your customers now use to find businesses. For most companies, invisibility costs far more than

crawling does.

3. How long does GEO take to work?

Faster than classic SEO: AI systems re-crawl and update sources

continuously, so on-site changes can appear in answers within weeks. Building the review and community

footprint for competitive “best in city” answers takes 3–6 months.

4. Can an agency do GEO for my business?

Yes — it’s a natural extension of SEO and content work. We

implement everything above for clients (and for ourselves — this site runs on the exact playbook in this

post). Start with a free audit.
